Property Description

The holiday accommodation is a self catering one bedroom apartment in Northern Italy which has been renovated in 2007, including a brand new kitchen.The self catering apartment we offer to rent is in Dumenza with views of Lake Maggiore. It is close to Luino by Lake Maggiore, in the Italian lakes and mountains. It is the ideal holiday accommodation for exploring Lake Maggiore and the other lakes and mountains in northern Italy and the Italian speaking canton of Ticino in Switzerland. It is also close to Lake Lugano and Lake Como is not far away. Lake Garda is further east

Living Area

The accommodation is a one bedroom self catering apartment in Italy. It can sleep a family of 4 as there is a double bed in the bedroom and a double sofabed in the lounge. Kitchen/lounge, including cooker, fridge & microwave, toaster, kettle, filter coffee machine, TV and a double sofa bed Bedroom, wardrobes & bedside tables, additional seating dining suite, one double bed Bathroom with bath & shower over the bath. Entrance hall Lockable storage in the basement for mountain bikes If you would like to bring a pet please make sure it is a well behaved dog only.

The holiday accommodation is located Dumenza which is in the mountains above Lake Maggiore, about 3 miles from town of Luino, which is on the lake. It is also close to Lake Lugano as it is only 1 mile from the Swiss Border, the Italian speaking canton of Ticino. Lake Como is not far and Lake Garda is further east. There is bus service to Luino.. The average daily max in July is 27C or 81F. There are two restaurants (Ristorante Smeraldo & Osteria Vino Porcini) and a bar (Bar Sport) within walking distance of the self catering apartment. The supermarket is only a couple of minutes walk from the self catering apartment building. There is also a baker's (panificio) where you can buy bread milk cheese and most other essentials. There is also a pharmacy and a post office.

Local Activities

Borromean Islands - The best way to get to these islands is by boat from Luino. You can by a tourist ticket (biglietto turistico) for about €18 per person which will cover the return trip to the islands and the boat trips between the islands. The first island is Isola Madre. This only has one restaurant so it is best to make use of your time in the Botanic gardens (cost €10 per person). The next boat leaves for Isola Superiore just over an hour later.

Isola Superiore has a small village on it with a wider choice of lakeside cafes and restaurants. Isola Bella is a very short boat trip from Isola Superiore and this also has more cafes as well as botanic gardens. If you spend and hour on Superior and an hour on Isola Bella you can catch the last boat to Luino, which leaves at about 3.30pm and arrives just after 5pm. Please check timetables locally as occasionally they may change.

Maccagno - with its beach & beautiful views. Maccagno is on the shore of Lake Maggiore, only 11 minute drive from Dumenza. Maccagno is in a magnificent location on Lake Maggiore with the lake on one side and green valleys on the other. From here you can see the beautiful peaks of Canton Ticino as well as the Borromean Gulf. If you would like to spend the day relaxing in the sun in the summer or take a stroll in the winter there is a beach. The beach is found at the mouth of the river Giona. Over the river there is museum, with a collection of modern art.

Luino Market - every Wednesday. Luino holds its large market every Wednesday, with people coming from Switzerland, Germany and France. The stalls fill the all the main streets of the town are filled with market stalls, with a wide variety of goods. There is an almost limitless supply of handbags, shoes and sunglasses The weekly market has been held on Luino since 1541. It has over 300 stalls, making it the biggest weekly market in Europe. Luino is the most important town on the Lombardy side of the lake and the nearest town to Dumenza, about 10 minutes by car. There are also buses that run between Dumenza and Luino. Market day is the only day when you have to pay to use the large gravel car park by the lake, but you usually find a space.

Milan - visit Italy's second city for the day. If you would like to take a trip to Milan it is only 1.5 hours by car from Dumenza. Milan is the capital of Lombardy and Italy’s second city with a municipa population of 1.3 million. It is located in the flat plains if of Lombardy. If you only have a short time to spend in Milan make sure you visit Galleria Vittorio Emanuele (reputed to be the world's oldest shopping centre) in the Piazza Duomo and of course the Duomo (Cathedral). The Duomo has over 2,000 sculptures and numerous spires.

Milano is Italy’s cultural, industrial and financial centre and one of the main fashion centres in the world

Laveno - beautiful views of opposite shore - Laveno is only 35 minute by car Dumenza and from here you can catch a car ferry to the other side of the lake, leaving every 20 minutes. But there is plenty to see and do in Laveno as well. Laveno has a beautiful panorama of the shore on the Piedmont side of the lake, and the Borromean Gulf. The town is overlooked by the Sasso di Ferro which can be reached by cable car or by walking along the ancient mule-track. There is also a car ferry to the opposite shore.

As well as having so many beautiful panoramas, Laveno is also famous for its pottery and china. The photos below were taken on taken on New Year's Eve. Just south of Laveno you will find Santa Caterina

Santa Caterina - jewel of Lake Maggiore. Santa Caterina del Sasso or St Catherine's Hermitage, one of the jewels of Lake Maggiore, is perched just above the water. It is found on the eastern shore of the lake just south of Laveno, clinging to the cliffs of Sasso Ballaro.

In the 12th century Alberto Besozzi, a wealthy merchant, almost lost his life in a storm as his boat capsized. He prayed to Saint Catherine of Alessandria to save him when a wave deposited him on a ledge. He the dedicated the rest of his life to the saint, living in in a cave as a hermit while the locals lowered food and water to him in a basket. The hermitage was founded in the 13th century. It is notable not only for its position but also its decaying frescoes dating from its foundation.

Val Veddasca - great area for walking. Val Veddasca is north of Dumenza and includes the Passo della Forcora (m 1179), about 12 miles from Dumenza. To get there by car head first for Maccagno then follow the signs Veddasca and then Lake Delio.When you reach your destination you will find amazing views of the mountains around Lake Maggiore. It is ideal for walking holidays in Lake Maggiore. There are plenty of walking routes marked from the pass. Passo della Forcora is a great starting point for hiking in the surrounding mountains where, and if it happens to snow in winter you can enjoy alpine skiing and cross-country skiing. There are a couple of skilifts. Passo della Forcora If not you can have a meal or a drink at the Sciovia Ristorante.

Colmegna - the ideal place for a relaxing afternoon relax by the lake The quiet little village of Colmegna, set in Colmegna Bay, can be found on the shore of Lake Maggiore, just up the road from Luino on the road to Maccagno. It has a has a gorgeous wide lake view. You can stop by the Hotel Camin Colmegna, a late-18th-century villa, and have a drink or even a meal in its lakeside restaurant and explore its beautiful gardens by the lake.

Lake Lugano & Antique Market Lugano Antique Market Lugano - This antique market can be found in Quartiere Canova 6900 Lugano, just over the border in Switzerland. The opening hours are Friday: 8.00-12.00 and Saturday: 8.00-17.00, Every Friday morning and all day Saturday an antiques market is held in Lugano off Via Canova. Here you will find collections of old vinyl records, china, glassware, jewellery and old paintings. You can great views over Lugano by either driving up Monte Bre or taking the funicular railway.

Centovalli Railway - Ticino Centovalli railway is one of Switzerland’s most scenic rides. Trains run from under Locarno station on the northern part of Lake Maggiore into the spectacular Centovalli. It is named after its large number of side valleys. For a full day out you can buy a Lago Maggiore Express ticket, which combines the Centovalli line with a train at Domodossola south to the Maggiore resort of Stresa, then a boat back north to Locarno (9hr total). If you do not want to buy a train ticket you there is a road.

The Centovalli has plenty of hiking with trails for all abilities crossing the mountians and between stations on the line. Bicycles are available for hire at more than 100 Swiss railway stations including the border station at Camedo on the Centovalli railway.
