Area Description
Local area information
The Bodrum Peninsula boasts a diversity of resorts only minutes away from each other by car or local dolmus and you can have an extremely varied holiday visiting places like Gumusluk, a local picturesque fishing village, Yalikavak a charming resort with lots to do and of course, Bodrum itself with it's pretty whitewashed houses and tumbling bouganvillea.
Bodrum is a lively place with colourful nightlife and plenty of shops in the maze of back streets near the Castle. Bodrum is home to one of the Seven Wonders of the World - the Tomb of King Mausolus. It is the yachting centre of the Aegean and the Marina is full of expensive international yachts and traditional wooden gulets. The area is also convenient for Ephesus and many other sites of historical interest, such as the Temple of Apollo at Didim and the Rock Tombs at Dalyan.
Mandalina Villa is set in a lovely quiet market-garden area between Kadikalesi and Turgutreis, approx 18 km from Bodrum. There are small shops and restaurants very close by and a 3 minute walk to the main road puts you on the dolmus routes to Gumusluk and the rest of the peninsula.
Opposite the villa is a tree-lined roadway which leads to the sandy beach with a wooden pier only 100 metres away. There is a local shop opposite the site for day to day needs and two friendly local restaurants too.
Walking along the beach into Kadikalesi you pass little cafes and fish restaurants with tables set right on the sand. There are watersports available such as windsurfing and paragliding. The village has local shops, restaurants and a taxi rank.
Walking in the other direction takes you by seafront restaurants and hotels into Turgutreis itself only 20 minutes by foot with little backsteets full of shops, bars and more restaurants to choose from, many along the beachfront with wonderful views of the sunset that this area is famous for. You will find supermarkets, banks and all the essential amenites here. There is a new marina further along the seafront with designer shops and smart cafes and bars with a more sophisticated atmosphere.
Turgutreis is host to the biggest outdoor market on the peninsula on a Saturday and draws people from all over looking for clothes, handbags, jewellery, textiles and rugs, amongst other things, and a farmers market with the largest selection of delicious looking (and tasting!) fresh produce you will find.
Turgutreis has a long sandy beach for relaxing days or take a trip to one of the neighbouring resorts;
Gumusluk, a pretty unspoilt fishing village only 5 minutes away by car or dolmus where you can watch the catch being brought in on the traditional little fishing boats and then try it freshly grilled right on the beach or stroll around the local jewellery and craft stalls and pick up a handmade souvenir.
Enjoy a ride over to Yalikavak with is charming atmosphere and restored windmills. Yalikavak is home to talented artists who show their work in the town alongside recommended bars and restaurants.
Take a trip to Akyarlar and enjoy the wonderful view of Kos from one of the beachfront cafes.
There are many more places to explore and you can get around perfectly well on the local 'dolmus' (small minibus) service very cheaply or hire a car if you prefer although will not find a car necessary to enjoy your holiday here.
We also recommend a boat trip from Turgutreis around the many small islands and beautiful bays.
Day trips can also be taken via ferry from Turgutreis to Kos 40 minutes away and Rhodes.
Kadikalesi Weather ? An all year round sunshine destination
As you would expect from the Mediterranean the weather in Kadikalesi is nothing short of spectacular. The south west of Turkey benefits from over 300 sunny days per year and temperatures during the summer can head well over the 30C mark. The high temperatures in Kadikalesi make this an all year round sunshine destination. The summer months will be uninterrupted by rain and the winter months are mild with temperatures hovering around the 15C mark. From May until October the temperature in Kadikalesi will not usually dip below 24C and your can expect over 10 hours of sunshine per day during the six peak season months.
The beautiful sea breeze, so popular with the windsurfers, also means that even the hottest days will be enjoyable.
