Suitability

Due to the many terraces this house is not suited to toddlers or children under the age of 8, nor is it really ideal for the less mobile. Casa Lucia is best suited to very young infants, children from 9 years and above and able bodied adults.

Local Activities

From Tarifa, the most southerly point of Europe, the Costa de la Luz - ‘coast of light' - runs like a golden ribbon westwards to Cadiz and beyond to the border with Portugal. Understandably the Spanish themselves favour this Atlantic shoreline for their holidays, but there is sand to spare!

One of the jewels of this coast is the small fortress town of Vejer de la Frontera, a dazzle of sugar-cube houses high on a ridge. However, it is the fine sandy beaches of this coastline that appeal to most, especially Vejer Costa or El Palmar as it is more commonly known.

Guesta who have previously stayed in Casa Lucia have enjoyed vsits to Arcos de la Frontera, Cádiz, Jerez, Seville, Medina Sidonia and Vejer de la Frontera.
Walks through the Grazelema or Alcornocales Natural Parks; Visits to the Tio Pepe Bodega and the Royal Andalucían School of Equestrian Art in Jerez.
Also popular are whale-watching and day trips to Tangiers in Morocco from nearby Tarifa.

Everything apart from alpine/snow sports!

The long sandy beaches of the Costa de la Luz run from the Portuguese border to the meeting point of the Atlantic and Mediterranean oceans at Tarifa. They are generally always a couple of degrees cooler than the Mediterranean beaches of the Costa del Sol and are often fanned by refreshing breezes. Most visitors to this area are Spanish; consequently outside of weekends, other than the most popular beaches, they are generally uncrowded.

The following are some suggestions to start you off but you will probably find your own favourites.

Bolonia: Situated about 10km west of Tarifa and signposted off the N-340 also as Ruinas de Baelo Claudio as there are also the ruins of a Roman town just next to the beach. In ancient times it had a thriving trade exporting fish [paste to Rome and at this site of Baelo Claudia (170B.C.) you can see the excavated outlines of the forum, the Market Place and several Temples. There is a lovely long stretch of beach here, you can walk for miles There are some stretches of nudist beach along here. It also boasts good fish restaurants serving freshly caught fish and shellfish.

Conil de la Frontera: Conil is a popular holiday destination for Spaniards and the beaches closest to the town can get quite busy during the height of the season but have all the beach facilities that might be popular with children especially. You can rent out pedalo boats and canoes and have some excellent fish restaurants on hand. Playa de la Fontanilla is just out of the town whilst Playa de los Bateles is just in front of the old town.

El Palmar: This is a small village with a couple of shops and a few restaurants that have grown up along the front. There is plenty of beachfront to choose from here and it offers a good choice of bars and simple restaurants. One restaurant not to be missed is the charming La Chanca, which is picturesquely set in an old tuna salting building, situated at the end of the beach. It is particularly pleasant to enjoy an evening drink or a meal here, when the garden becomes awash with rose-coloured light as the sun sets over the ocean.

Caños de Meca: 100m cliffs and freshwater ponds make this a popular destination for snorklers. If you take the road from here towards Barbate there are some magnificent beaches hidden behind the pine forest. You will see a few parking places and from here there are paths leading down to some quieter beaches. It is also a beautiful drive!

Barbate: The busy tuna fishing port of Barbate also has a lovely long sandy beach. It is not a place of elegance, but is popular with the Spanish, and not surprisingly, has some good fish restaurants where you can enjoy the local delicacy – Mojama (smoked tuna).

El Cabo de Trafalgar (Cape Trafalgar): This was the scene of the famous battle and also recommended by locals as one of the most sheltered beaches if the wind is blowing.

El Roche: The main beach of El Roche is called La Playa del Puerco and then going eastwards from here towards Conil there are a series of small bays which are less easily accessible but therefore are quite a bit quieter. The beach or playa is signposted through the housing estate of El Roche situated on the opposite side of the N-340 from your villa.

Zahara de los Atunes: A town with a good selection of restaurants and a fine sandy beach.
