Area Description
Capestang got its name since originally it jutted into a lake or "entang" but this was drained in the Middle Ages. Hence "Cap Etang". It is a popular village (pop approx 3500) being well visited by tourists, yet despite this the village has not been spoiled and retains its essential old world charm. The friendly attitude of the locals add to the pleasure of staying here.
This village is on le Canal du Midi and has 4 full time restaurants and three bars.
It has been in existance for 1,000 years and many of the old artifacts still remain including sections of the old village wall, a very striking church and the manor.
The local industry is viticulture producing many good wines.
This area also abounds with history from pre Roman times, then the Roman period followed by the Cathars right up to some unhappy episodes during WWII.
It is close to both the Pyrenees and the Massif Centrale and the Spanish border is just over an hour away. Nearer to home the nearest Mediterranean beaches are just 25 Kilometres away.
It is a rural location with woods, lakes and wild boar in the vicinity.
Being just 10 miles or so from Beziers West on the A9 Autoroute and just a little further to the bottom of the A75 (reached via a by pass going past Beziers) it is conveniently located by road transport being 15 Kilometres from Beziers and 18 Kilometres north of Narbonne.
It is well serviced by airports, Beziers being the nearest, about a half hour away, then Carcassonne, Perpignan and Montpellier being about an hour away. Nimes is about 1.5 hours, Toulouse about 2 hours and Gerona just slightly more.
The climate is Mediterranean, boasting of 300 sunny days a year on average.
