Property Description

Chateau des Egons is a hidden gem with lots of space and ambiance, large heated pool and an all weather tennis court.

The site dates back to Roman times and the main building dates from the 15th century. The Chateau is considered a local historic monument, with interesting features and signs of fortification. It is elegant inside and outside and has many returning visitors each year.

Accommodation

The accommodation is very spacious. All the rooms are large and furnished with French country antiques ? lots of comfort and space for 11 or so people (plus cot) to enjoy. Even on very hot days the thick stone walls keep it is cool inside. The Chateau is for your exclusive use. The property is managed by a local British resident who lives close to the Chateau.

The grounds
3 acres in all. The large front courtyard is enclosed by stone buildings; a large barn, stables, a loggia and two towers. The courtyard is gravelled and the entrance to the courtyard has large baronial gates and ornamental stone columns. The courtyard is a perfect area for dining by candlelight or observing at the milky way.

There are several separate places to eat ? the courtyard, the kitchen, the dining hall, under the loggia or on the terrace. A tranquil and very private setting, the two and a half acre garden is fully enclosed by a clipped hedge.

Recreation areas
The large decked and heated swimming pool has panoramic views and shade under the walnut trees. The all weather Tennis Court can be used all year round.

The terrace
The 100ft terrace overlooks the South West garden and pool and has stone tables and seating so you can enjoy the sunsets across the valley.

Services
Cleaning is undertaken on Saturdays when bed linen and towels are changed including swimming towels.

The seasons
In May and June the area is full of wild flowers and the orchards are in full blossom. The grape picking season is late September/October when it can be as hot as July/August. If you are not restricted to school holiday periods May/June Sept/Oct is a beautiful time to visit the South West.

The Chateau accommodation is spacious with large rooms and lots of comfort and privacy, when needed. The Chateau has places and spaces to suit the mood and the occasion.

Area Description

The Chateau is an ideal place to explore and experience
the whole region. Sample the many local vineyards and food producers that surround the Chateau and are all set out in the information book for you to review on your arrival.

The activities in the area including golf, markets and activities on the river are also set out in the Information Book with maps, contacts and addresses.

While you're here you should take the opportunity to explore the local towns and centres, here are just a few worth a visit.

Situated in the Gironde hills bordering the Lot-et-Garonne and the Dordogne, a beautiful location in the wine region of the South-West
of France. This scenic area offers a wide range of activities and
sight-seeing excursions.

BERGERAC
40 minutes by car, the largest town on the river Dordogne and the centre of the region?s wine production. It has a beautiful restored old quarter, interesting architecture and a large shopping centre. There are two large markets (Saturday morning).

DURAS
The local town is a pretty arcaded bastide town 6km from the property, ideal for daily shopping. There are restaurants, supermarket, bars, banks, bakers, butchers and petrol stations. The market is in the main square every Monday morning. The town is on a hill with lovely views and the once grand Chateau de Duras is open to the public.

In July the population of Duras storm the bastide and the Chateau de Duras dressed in traditional costumes, and then eat, drink and dance in the square ?everybody is welcome. In the summer Duras has a famous antique fair and wine festival.

MARMANDE
A large town 30 minutes by car. The popular Saturday farmers market is covered;
good to know in case it rains.

MONSEGUR
Another beautiful bastide town with good shopping just a few kilometres from Duras. Market day is on Friday and is held in the main square.

SAINT EMILION
Beautiful ancient town. Outstanding wine and restaurants. 35 minutes by car.

SAINTE FOY-LA-GRANDE
20 minutes by car from the Chateau, an old town on the river Dordogne with excellent shops and restaurants. There is a bustling market every Saturday morning.

Outdoor activities available locally
For those more adventurous or who like a round of golf or a trip on the river, here are somethings you may find interesting.

CANOEING ON THE DORGOGNE
Canoeing and Kayaking on the river is fun for all ages and shapes, only a 15 minute drive at Pessac. Fishing licenses can be obtained locally.

GOLF
Chateau des Vigiers is a Golf and Country Club with a championship course and sport and leisure facilities including two excellent restaurants. Chateau Des Vigiers is 15 minutes by car from Chateau Des Egrons.

OTHER ACTIVITIES AND OUTINGS
An equestrian centre is just a few minutes away and our Information Book at the Chateau sets out places to see, things to do (eg. Go-Karting, cycling, horse riding, adventure playgrounds etc.) and local restaurants and wines to tryout.

How to get here
There are a number of way to get to the Chateau Des Ergons, here are just a few of the simpler directions.

By Car
Major routes south from the channel ports; aim for Libourne, a town north-east of Bordeaux. The chateau is less than an hour's drive from Libourne.

By Train
Take the Eurostar from Waterloo and change at either Lille (a platform change) or Paris (involves crossing the city) in order to board the southbound TGV to Libourne station were car hire can be arranged. There is an excellent (if expensive) overnight motorail service from Calais to Brive, depositing its passengers and their cars within 2 hours of the chateau.

By Air
Wide choice of airlines and prices; regular flights to Bordeaux (80-minutes drive) or Bergerac (40 minutes) where car hire can be organised. Toulouse and Biarritz can be used as alternative airports.
