Area Description
Acequias is named for the stone water channels which have been used for centuries to share precious water resources. Little has changed here and this system of acequias, which have made the Lecrin Valley so verdant, is still used by the local campesinos today.
The village is well served by the local traders who visit the small villages of the Lecrin Valley. They deliver freshly baked bread to the village daily, as well as eggs, fish, meat, seasonal fruit etc. For more comprehensive supplies, the small town of Durcal is a 5 minute drive and has supermarkets, shops, restaurants bars, banks and an internet cafe. Alternatively the neighbouring village of Niguelas is only a pleasant 20 min stroll - with much bird-life and even the odd wild Ibex (mountain goat) along the way. Niguelas also offers shops, some great tapas bars and restaurants and even an old Olive Mill museum.
The beautiful city of Granada together with its Alhambra Palace is a 25 min drive, with the ski slopes of the Sierra Nevada a further 25. Llanjarron, gateway town to the Alpujarran region, is only quarter of an hour and the coast, in the shape of the picturesque white village of Salobrena (with some great fish restaurants), takes half an hour.
Or try treating yourself to fabulous meal at the Alqueria de los Lentos - in a converted mill just outside Niguelas and strolling home under the stars...
