Area Description
COMARES
Please check out our website www.vineridgeretreats.com for extra local information. This beautiful and unspoilt "Blanco" Village sits majestically 739 metres above sea-level giving it the attribute of being the highest village in Axarquia. Axarquia from the arabic "sharquiyya" meaning the eastern zone, covers the area from Malaga to Nerja and then inland to the stunning countryside where Comares sits as a beacon high up on a rock. The location of Comares meant it was one of the last defences of the Moorish empire and led to warning fires to being sent to Granada to warn of attacks. The hilltop village is still very unchanged and with a population of only 1500 it simply does not have the room to expand and hence remains unspoilt and one of the finds in Spain which still gives the WOW factor to all who discover it. How many places can you see majestic mountain regions and the Mediterranean from one spot and, as you look upon the highest peak in the Malaga province as in Mount Maroma which at 2068 metres makes Snowdon look like a hill !! and the stunning blue of the Mediterranean which welcomes you from the hills of Comares. It is amazing to think that the Malaga airport is less than 1 hour away and Granada only 90 minutes making this tucked away village accessible to travellers on all budgets and is serviced especially well by the likes of Ryan Air from the London Airports and most of the regional ones. The area around Comares is surrounded by 5 walking routes and historic sites such as Mazmullar which was a Moorish settlement inhabited 1000 years ago. In fact the whole Moorish history can be traced by following the quant ceramic steps inlaid in the cobbled streets that lead to plaques explaining the past in glorious colour. Also there are horse-riding, quad biking, mountain biking and other forms of energetic activities all around the village. As with most Spanish villages Comares enjoys it's Festivals which include the San Hilario procession in January and The Festival of Verdiales in August, which is a wonderful 4 day event which is both exciting, fun and steeped in culture and history. Verdiales is the folk style of this region which the Comares group with its colourful head dresses and accompanied by guitars, flutes, tambourines and violins is famous for, to the extend that one of the three distinctive styles of Verdiales is named after the village. There are several bars and restaurants offering traditional Spanish fayre and 2 supermarkets which are more than adequate for the locals and tourists, but you will be pleased to hear that you will not find one stuffed donkey or kiss me quick hat !! Comares can be relaxing, cultured, mesmerising, stunning and above all unforgettable.
