Area Description
There is so much to see and do in and around Skye and Lochalsh. Here is a selection of the attractions and features of the area that the visitors said they enjoyed most! As you can see by the map below you are close to all of Skye and Lochalsh's attractions. Of course the area itself is ideal for walkers, climbers, cycling, fishing or just touring the quiet single track roads by car ... this is after all, the Highlands of Scotland!
PLOCKTON (2 Miles) The village referred to as the Jewel in the Highlands as it is without a doubt one of the prettiest villages in the Scottish Highlands (complete with palm trees!) There are: seal trips, shops, art studios and galleries, dingy sailing, pubs, restaurants, some great walks and even a castle across the loch.
DORNIE (9 miles) Home to Eilean Donan Castle of the clan Macrae. You can go into the castle and there is also a superb visitor centre and shop / restaurant. A few yards up the road is another restaurant and hotel. The village of Dornie is also worth visiting.
KINTAIL (14 miles) This is a spectacular area with the well known Five Sisters of Kintail hills (ridge). If you are walking the ridge remember its a long walk back to where you leave your car. You may want to start from the LOW end of the hills at the local Hotel and then its all down hill on the return journey. Kintail is also where you will find a lovely walk through the hills to The Falls of Glomach.
APPLECROSS & TORRIDON Driving to Applecross is Lochcarron a picturesque lochside village. The road then winds its way through the glen and over the highest single track road in Britain to the secluded village of Applecross. Further on is Torridon with spectacular ancient mountains and Inverewe with its magificent gardens and warm climate.
GLENELG (25 miles) Climb over Mam Ratagan by car and down into the concealed glen that is Glenelg. Here can be found a well preserved Jacobean fort and pictish broch as well as Arnisdale and the remote Loch Hourn. There is also a good restaurant for lunch which sells hand made candles and crafts. You can also get the ferry to the Isle of Skye from here - just follow the signs or ask for Roddy. Check winter sailings first though.
SKYE (4 miles to Skye Bridge) The island of Skye has attractions too numerous to mention. You should go there twice as it's only 4 miles from your lodge here in Duirinish. Don't miss the Clan Donald, Dunvegan Castle, Portree, Staffin and the Quairaing. There's even a distillery at Carbost.
KYLE OF LOCHALSH (4 miles) Transport and commerce centre for the area. Trains, buses, the Skye Bridge, Glass bottom boat and a marina make Kyle a definite on your list of places to visit. Bank, Doctor, Dentist and Police are based here too.
