Property Description
Grand entrance steps take you up onto an elevated terrace and into the high ceilinged, stark white central living/dining room, simply designed in the Swahili style with traditional plasterwork and wooden beams, with a magnificent locally crafted dining table that can easily seat 16 people. The living room has five further doorways: the largest directly onto the pool, through two huge shuttered doors; another leads to the first floor terrace stairs and pool room; into the back courtyard garden; up the stairs to the bedrooms and finally, well concealed behind the beautifully carved plaster ?niche? wall, the kitchen entrance.
The house has four double bedrooms, all with bathroom en-suite and each with a private balcony with sea views. The large master bedroom faces west with superb sea views framed by coconut palms. Its spacious bathroom has a Swahili style bath and from the bedroom there is direct access to the rooftop patios. The pool has a dining area, baraza and a poolroom. A wooden deck, partially shaded by two indigenous trees, reaches out onto the beach. The house is furnished with traditional Swahili items of furniture, locally crafted items and pieces from around Africa and Asia.
The roof terrace, where many meals are eaten, is one of the coolest and most panoramic spots on the beach.
Mature coconut palms, doum palms and many indigenous shrubs and trees grow around the house. A small coconut plantation of 40 palms has recently been replanted and in the courtyard garden, jasmine, frangipani, desert rose, date palms and hibiscus are growing. There are fresh herbs outside the kitchen door.

Area Description
Kizingoni Beach stretches across 24 acres of golden beachfront, close to the southernmost tip of Lamu Island. There are not many stretches of beach like this left in the world. It offers seclusion, cooling winds, fresh water and clean seas, yet the delights and supplies of Lamu and Shela are a twenty-minute boat ride away.
The property is covered with established coconuts and doum palms with some indigenous woodland. We have planted hundreds more coconuts, indigenous trees and tropical shrubs, plus an experimental orchard and covered vegetable garden. There is clean water from shallow wells and plenty of wind and sun to run the windmills and solar panels that provide power and hot water.
The beach starts with us, but curves around the tip of the island and stretches a further 12 golden miles to Shela Village. It is virtually empty, apart from myriad crabs, migrant and local sea birds, shells and the occasional donkey troop.
Our local village of Kipungani is a friendly and unspoilt fishing hamlet. From there we receive coconut palm products for building, including the makuti thatch for our roofs, makeka for the paths and all our woven carpets. It is also our main supply of staff, fish, dhows and donkeys. Kizingoni Beach provides employment, trade and funding for community initiatives. Many local events such as weddings and festivals are celebrated together.
There is plenty to do at Kizingoni Beach, for those looking for an active holiday. We provide various water sports equipment; the swimming, snorkeling and walking is excellent; sailing is possible both in our dhow, Kilindini, and also in smaller hobbie cats from Kipungani Bay; creek fishing and deep sea fishing can be arranged and there is an opportunity for a small safari on the mainland.
