Property Description
This much loved, three storey VERY French house of real character, next to the spectacular Canal du Midi, is the French home of myself and my French wife Gisele, when we're not in England, and furnished accordingly. Let us say straightaway that if you are expecting a villa with a swimming pool and gold taps then this house is not for you. It is a home, and all we ask is that you enjoy yourselves and look after it for us. It is ideal if you want a real taste of French life (markets, boules, cafes, boulanger) or let the kids go off safely on their own or try out your French on the friendly neighbours. The jewel in the crown ?well, she is a little gem-our neighbour, Nadine, is a superb French cook and, if you wish, after a long day out, she will cook you a meal and bring it to the house for you-and then you will realise just how good she is! And/or you can try any of the four restaurants up at the square. The house? It is shaded by the castle. Don?t be impressed by the word castle- it really means a huge sandstone block wall! Parking is smack opposite or about 100m up the road in the car-park. No garden, but no traffic either so ?happy hour? is outside on the bench. The house is very French-after all, Gisele IS French! -Dried flowers abound, hanging down from the old beams. From the road you enter straight into the lounge. The kitchen is beyond the Languedoc spiral staircase and has a whole range of cooking utensils, sink, gas cooker, fridge, washing machine, dish washer, cupboards and shelves, plus chairs and round table. In the corner is an open fireplace, which you will not need! The staircase goes up to a front bedroom (double bed), a rear bedroom (two single beds) and bathroom (shower, toilet and washbasin). Up again to the attic, where there are four or five single beds, which we usually have for the grandchildren! There are hundreds of books in French and in English on all floors so you must find one you like- or bring you own! A parasol is in the house for visits to the beaches which are about 25 minutes away by car, and of course lots of ?boules? if you fancy a game in the park opposite or up at the canal. However, the best place to swim is at Bize, about 4km away, in a pool in the River Cesse ?(yes, a Cesse pool!) where the crystal clear water is refreshing and there is shade from the trees. You can chose from several nearby bakers, one just the other side of the castle and another up in the square. For general shopping use the market and local shops- (butcher and ?alimentation? are diagonally across the square). At the edge of town is a supermarket, and there is even a Lidls on the other side of town! Cycling is a lovely way to explore, especially within the village or along the canal. Bed linen and towels are at extra cost. Please keep the shutters shut and the windows open. Finally we would ask you to leave the place as you find it. There is book in the lounge of places of interest and we would ask you to add to it. Do let us know of any good restaurants, places of geographic or historic interest, or of good days out, undiscovered picnic spots, swimming places etc. You must visit the Oppidum d?Enserune, a few kilometres out of town past Poihles. It is a Gallo-Roman settlement, high on a hill overlooking the plain to Narbonne. I won?t spoil it for you by telling you what you can see from there-just go! Further afield are Carcassonne (marvellous), Minerve (spectacular), Lagrasse and Perpignan, and the wonderful Parc Regional du Haut Languedoc (the second largest in France). Sete is a colourful fishing village with excellent fresh seafood. You are not far from the Corbieres, Cathar castles and the spectacular open-carriaged ?Little Yellow Train? ride up the valley towards Andorra.
Whatever you do ?enjoy it-leave the place as you find it and please no smoking in the house. You will not be disappointed!

Area Description
CAPESTANG (market on Wednesday and Sunday) is a delightful village on the famous Canal du Midi, which joins the Atlantic to the Mediterranean Sea. The main centres of Capestang are the recently renovated square just the other side of the castle alongside the massive cathedral of St. Etienne, and the canal port, which is about 500m behind the house. The port is very busy in summer when the canal is active with both hired and touring craft. In the square you can sit outside the cafes and eavesdrop or just watch the world go by. All sorts of birds can be seen along the Canal du Midi and in the Languedoc Regional Park, just 30-km to the north, where there are spectacular mountain walks. If you want to know which birds look at Keith Marsh?s website at www.eurobirding.co.uk
A parasol is in the house for visits to the beaches which are about 25 minutes away by car.
