Property Description

Had a stressful year? Then you deserve a really restful holiday. Come and experience a little piece of the 'real' French life and unwind!

Hope Cottage could be the answer. Located some 3 kilometres from the pretty village of Kergrist in the Morbihan region of Brittany, Hope Cottage is a recently renovated longere attached to the owners house, and was converted specifically to be a holiday cottage.

Situated at the end of the lane that solely serves the cottage, we are some 700 metres from the quiet country road that leads to the village. Peace and tranquillity are the order of the day here – well, we do occasionally hear the sound of a distant tractor!

Living Area

Hope Cottage can comfortably sleep two (plus a baby up to 2 years old in the provided cot) in the two bedrooms, with a double bed in the master bedroom and twin beds in the first floor bedroom.

There is a shower room with toilet, wash basin and washing machine which is accessed through the downstairs master bedroom.

The cottage is equipped with satellite television (which can pick up BBC TV, BBC Radio and ITV (and many other channels), or, if you remember to bring your own satellite card, whatever channels you subscribe to), a video player and a CD/DVD player, all for your personal pleasure and to make your stay more enjoyable. Don't forget to bring your favourite Movie DVDs if you like to spend evenings in!

A selection of videos is also available for your enjoyment.

There is a woodburning stove for guests staying at cooler times of the year (logs available at a small extra charge) and there is background electric heating for those cooler evenings in the spring and autumn.

Kitchen Facilities

The open plan lounge/kitchen/dining area has a modern fitted kitchen with gas hob, electric oven, microwave, fridge and is fully equipped with toaster and electric cafetiere.

Outside

Outside the cottage we provide garden furniture and a Pétanque set in case you are at a loose end! For that lovely summer evening alfresco meal there is a gas barbeque supplied. The peaceful and extensive garden makes a lovely place to enjoy your Sundowners with privacy and quiet.

Local Activities

A mere fifteen minute drive away from Hope Cottage lies the spectacular Lac de Guerledan. It is an artificial lake, created to produce electricity by flooding a valley. The lake is over twelve kilometres long and has had several sandy beaches created around its edge. Some of these beaches have bars, restaurants and cordoned-off swimming areas. There are also designated areas for water skiing and you can hire rowing boats, motor boats, canoes and fishing equipment. You can also take a cruise around the lakes. Trips are on a regular basis and in the summer it is possible to take an evening dinner cruise. It is possible to walk or ride around the lake and in 2005 the tourist authority created circular cycle routes that start and finish at the lake. Bike hire is also available from there.

At the Northern end of the Lake are the remains of the Abbaye de Bon Repos, which was built in the 12th century by Cistercian monks. It was destroyed during the French Revolution and is currently being slowly restored by volunteers. On a Sunday morning there is a street market there where you can buy traditional Breton food and products.

Other Information

Hope Cottage is situated near the village of Kergrist which is roughly an hour and a half from the ferry ports of St. Malo and Roscoff and the airports at Dinard (Ryanair), Rennes (Flybe – Air Wales) and Brest (Flybe).

The village is a typical Breton community which seems to be busy all the year round with numerous and varied events and festivals. It is famed for its three day Rock 'n' Roll concert in July and its illuminations at Christmas, and visitors are eagerly welcomed and accepted by the villagers who are pleased to share their Breton culture.

There are two Restaurant/Bars which both serve wonderful value home-cooked meals at lunchtimes, the price of which includes wine and cider. Share your experience with the locals whilst you enjoy. Both restaurants occasionally hold specialised themed evening meals which are well advertised.

We have one General Store run by Marie Christine that sells nearly everything you are likely to need: bread, cakes, cooked meats, some butchery, general groceries, beers, wines and spirits. It is the hub of village life and the gossip centre, so don't be surprised if you have to wait for service! The French just love to chat and nothing will stop them.
Opposite the store is the bar/tabac run by Marcelle. Her parents used to own our house (many years ago) and she was actually born in it!

In the village square stands the impressive church – a fine building. Half-way into Kergrist there is also the newly renovated Chapelle of St. Merec which has some beautiful stained glass – visits inside both can be arranged.
