B&B Casa Sonia

in the Alpujarra

Casa Rural Casa Sonia is an authentic, friendly and peaceful Bed and Breakfast type establishment, situated in the middle of the very picturesque white village of Busquístar, on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, in the Alpujarra, in Southern Spain.

Casa Sonia is a guesthouse that has been fully renovated in its original Berber style.

Local Activities

Walking in the Alpujarra

The walking area on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, has an irrigation system of Moorish origin which ensures that you can walk the complete year round in a surprising green landscape.

The footpaths partially go along the GR-7 and the recently constructed GR-142, passing through chestnut groves, but also along ancient drove roads and cobbled mule-paths. During your walking tours you come across many springs where you can quench your thirst.

Mountain-biking in Sierra Nevada

The Sierra Nevada and the Alpujarra are a good challenge for mountain-bikers. There are many kilometres of well maintained paths where you can cycle just by yourself or guided.

Cycling the circuit of the world championships 2000 is certainly a possibility.

Crossing the Sierra Nevada by bike with a nice descent to Granada is also a real challenge.

Culture

Trevélez is situated on an altitude of 1476 m. and is therefore the highest village of Spain. The village is especially famous as a producer of absolutely delicious hams, dried in the cold mountain air. A real speciality of the Alpujarras is Migas Alpujarreñas, a meal made by shepherds, consisting of breadcrumbs and slices of ham.

There is a small costume museum in Pampaneira. The largest information centre of the Parque Nacional de la Sierra Nevada has been established here. You can also buy detailed walking-maps there. Pampaneira is also known because of a small Tibetan convent, called 'O Sel Ling'. The boy who was elected to become the next Dalai Lama was born in these surroundings.

A Pista (unpaved path) starts off in Capileira, leading to Veleta (3398 m) on the Sierra Nevada. In Capileira is a very small folklore museum.

In the villages of Bubion, Pampaneira and Capileíra, there are several small shops selling ceramics and loosely woven carpets.

Órgiva is considered the centre of the Alpujarra-Baja (the lower part of the Alpujarra). The fertile valley of the Rió Guadalfeo looks biblical with its many orange, mandarin, lemon, almond, olive trees and wine grapes.

Remaining

From Busquístar you can take beautiful day-trips. With a car you can take superb journeys and visit e.g. Almeria, Granada, Guadix, Cabo de Gata. We will gladly advise you.
