Property Description

CASA MACHAYA OAXACA BED & BREAKFAST is unique among Oaxaca bed and breakfast accommodations in that we rent an entire level of our modern yet traditionally styled Mexican home to only one set of guests at a time. Completely private and with your own separate entrance, you’ll enjoy all amenities:

• fully equipped eat-in kitchen;

• landscaped patio with comfy lawn chairs, stone hand-hewn table and four chairs, and free-standing umbrella;

• bedsittingroom with queen bed, large futon, cable TV with DVD, 3 piece wicker settee, night tables;

• optional adjoining extra bedroom with full size bunk beds and chest of drawers;

• 3 piece washroom.

Your Canadian hosts spent four years building their hillside home with spectacular panoramic vistas using a Oaxacan architect, so you’re assured of traditional Mexican flare, color and design, yet with all the conveniences of home without any cultural surprises:

• an abundance of hot water for showering;

• complimentary 19 liter jugs of purified drinking water;

• as well as the little things for the kitchen such as microwave, electric juicer, coffee maker and blender (as well as the usual appliances);

• and even a comfy cot for taking a late afternoon snooze.

If traveling with children, we have a crib, as well as stroller, high chair and car seat. We also arrange babysitting services so as to enable you to get away for a quiet evening. We have made arrangements with a local hotel for use of their swimming pool.

We provide the comfort and services of the large Oaxaca hotels. We supply the following breakfast foods for those on our weekly plan. Bring your own laptop and the internet is free, 24 hours a day. We include in our rate weekday morning drives to the downtown location of your choice (about 10 minutes) be it to a Spanish language school, market, museum or gallery. Taxi and bus service is available a couple of blocks from the house.

Tour guide services are available to the ruins, villages on market days and other sites.

Also available on request are private cooking lessons by one of Oaxaca’s pre-eminent chefs.

Your host is recognized as a Oaxaca expert on an international travel website, and is a founding member of the Oaxaca Bed & Breakfast Association.

Oaxaca is our passion. Our goal is to make your vacation as culturally rich and productive as possible.

Visitors Reviews

Our house guests and touring clients write …

House guests:

“Once again, thank you so much! We so enjoyed our time in Oaxaca and Casa Machaya. Speaking for all of us, your in-depth knowledge of the culture was certainly a bonus for us. We could not have asked for a more accommodating host.”
Linda Breslin, Baltimore, MD.

“We had a truly memorable visit in Oaxaca and your hospitality and guide services were very much appreciated.”
Eve Hiatt, Louisville, KY.

“If we had stayed in a hotel, we would not have had the rich experience that we had. Oaxaca was the place we had not been before, and so it was ‘the meat’ of the trip. Thanks for all the things you did to make it really amazing.”
K. Marie Taylor, Sault Lake City, UT.

“Thanks again, to both of you, for making a long-anticipated ‘dream vacation’ a reality. You are great people, and we were fortunate to stay at your place.”
Kristine Hansen, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

“We decided it was the best place we’ve ever stayed in. Quite the travel bargain, too.”
Michael Sugerman, San Francisco, CA.

“Thank you both for a truly wonderful time in Oaxaca. I will be recommending Casa Machaya to everyone.”
Kathryn Anderson, London, Ontario

“We greatly enjoyed our time in Oaxaca and especially your tours. We would gladly be happy to recommend your home and kind attention.”
Gary Austin & Darlean Morris, St. Marys, Ontario

Touring clients:

“We did find a great tour guide in Oaxaca, Alvin Starkman, who drove us around the entire area. His explanations and sensitivity towards the people were very impressive. If you do travel to Oaxaca, please be sure to use Alvin as a guide.”
Philip Gissen, Milwaukee, WI.

“We had a great time meeting you and touring with you.”
Bob & Mary Ellen Campion, Westfield, N.J.

“To say you were one of the highlights of our trip is to say the LEAST!! Being guided by you was like having our private anthropologist / archaeologist / ethnographer. Not to mention the fact that you have forged warm, personal relationships with some of the most interesting and exciting people in Oaxaca and generously shared them with us. We felt very safe in your hands, too, due to your knowledge and understanding of customs and law. When I lost my exit visa, you knew just what to do and whom to contact. I could keep going on but will end by saying that on a scale of one to ten, Alvin, you’re a twenty!”
Lisa Kaneshiro, Hilo, Hawai’i

“You enriched our trip immeasurably, and left us yearning for a return visit.”
Charles DeFanti, New York.

“Thank you again for a great day in Oaxaca. Meeting you and hearing your stories and insights was a highlight of the trip.”
Paula (surname withheld), Washington, D.C.

“Marsha and I want to thank you for two wonderful days. Hiring a guide unseen can be dicey but the recommendations you had received were well placed and we were very comfortable with you. You were very knowledgeable, accommodating, flexible and friendly. We will be spreading your name far and wide!”
Don Squires, Fremont, CA.

“Thanks so much again for such a great day – we really enjoyed the whole experience!”
Danielle Garcia, Los Angeles, CA.
