Local Activities

The Turquoise/Lycian Coast is truly spectacular. Although there are plenty of things to do in Kalkan to keep you amused, the surrounding area is just as beautiful and entrenched in its history. It is well worth taking yourself further a field and exploring the sites if you can tear yourself away from the beach platforms! Excursions can be booked from Patara Prince or Kalkan village. Alternatively most sites are reached by the local bus service (dolmus) from the road outside of the resort. We also have a recommended reasonable car hire company called Paradise Car Hire located in the village should you want to venture further afield. The places outlined below are just a handful of the many places to visit in the area and our personal favourites!

KAPUTAS BEACH
About 7km east of Kalkan, Kaputus is a striking mountain gorge crossed by a small highway bridge. Below the bridge is a perfect little sandy cove and beach (Lonely Planet, 2005). Kaputus is a lovely sandy swimming cove and the sea is a brilliant turquoise blue, truly spectacular. A dolmus from kalkan runs here in the summer.

Perhaps combine a trip to Kaputus beach with lunch in the atmospheric seaside town of Kas (a beautiful journey down the coastal road) where the locals gather in the shady tea gardens to discuss life and the fisherman bring in their daily catch.

ISLAMAR
Islamar is a traditional Turkish sleepy small hamlet set in the Taurus mountains above Kalkan. The hamlet has spectacular views and a few wonderful restaurants. Islamar specialises in trout farms hence why the food is so good and it is a memory to treasure spending a relaxing afternoon in a vine covered restaurant sipping a glass of wine with views to die for! Islamar is about ten minutes by car above Kalkan.

KAYA KOY
Once a thriving Greek village, this town of over one thousand houses, two churches, fourteen chapels, and two schools, was completely deserted in 1923 when the 25,000 Greek inhabitants living there, along with more than a million other Greeks living throughout Turkey were repatriated to Greece through a massive government mandated population exchange between the two countries following the Greek war of independence. Since then, the village of Kayakoy, as it is called in Turkish, or Karmylassos, as it was called in Greek, which had been continually inhabited since at least the 13th century, has stood empty and crumbling, with only the breeze from the mountains and mist from the sea blowing through it's empty houses and streets. A wonderful place steeped in history that touches you to the very soul. Louis de Bernieres's novel ‘Birds Without Wings' is based on kayakoy (copy in the apartment) an excellent read which gives you a true idea of what kayakoy was like before the exchange.

SAKLIKENT GORGE
The spectacular Saklikent Gorge is cut into the Akdaglar Mountains . The gorge is 18km long and so steep and narrow that the sun doesn't penetrate, so the water is icy cold even in summer. You approach the gorge along a wooden boardwalk above the river that opens out into a series of wooden platforms suspended above the water where you can buy and eat trout. From there you can wade across the river, hanging onto a rope and then continue well into the gorge, sometimes walking in mud sometimes water (Lonely Planet, 2005) A fun day out amongst wonderful scenery.

PATARA BEACH
Patara beach is stunning and makes an enjoyable visit as well as the nearby ancient lycian site of Patara, its gorgeous landscape and great swimming. Part of a national park, it is a key biodiversity area, rich in birdlife and the breeding ground of the endangered loggerhead turtle (caretta caretta). Luckily the beach has been declared off-limits for development because of the turtles, they are nearing extinction and protection of their nesting sites on the Turkish coast is very important. The beach is closed after sunset from May to October to give the turtles peace in which to lay their eggs as it is the second most important turtle nesting beach in Turkey .

KEKOVA (THE SUNKEN CITY)
Kekova is the area of and around the ancient Lycian sunken city of Simena (partially submerged in water seen by boat) by several earthquakes in the 2nd century A.D. A charming mix of ancient, medieval and modern history makes the Kekova area interesting as well as beautiful. Kekova is an enjoyable place to visit for its beauty alone. It is a peaceful place of history, gorgeous turquoise water, sun, islands, unspoilt nature, blue skies and lots of wonderful(!!) swimming. A great day out on a boat!

Visitors Reviews

A wonderful place to stay. My lasting memory will be my husband saying on our first morning here Get up and look at this view, it is wonderful. We've really enjoyed our stay here. Having visited many places and eaten excellent food we feel refreshed & rested, ready to return to the U.K. The people are friendly & welcoming and the scenery is stunning.

K & A (Kettering)

We have had a lovely two weeks here & visited some wonderful places - Sunken City, Tlos, Saklikent gorge. The people in Kalkan are so welcoming & friendly and are wonderful with the children. We particularly enjoyed the top pool here as it was never busy. Great first thing in the morning. We did a superb boat trip on the Hazal boat (see their poster outside the Ilban (opposite the PTT). The food on the boat is exceptional and they really do look after you and it wasn't expensive. Did other trips with Abi Tours and Club Lycia – both very good. My son recommends the Phantom Wing as the best water sport followed by the Ringos. Anyway, I'm sure whoever stays next will find their own particular favourites – there is so much to do, and so many lovely places to eat but enjoy it, we certainly have.

Had a lovely lazy week in Kalkan. I've been coming to Turkey for about 15 years so didn't feel too guilty about not venturing out much to explore. I found everything I wanted right here! I preferred the buffets as the service tended to be a bit hit and miss. The Sicilian buffet was particularly good, so much I went twice! I loved all 3 pools and there was always a free sunbed. Everyone was very friendly and I didn't feel the least bit intimidated being a woman on my own. I loved the apartment and everything in it and can't wait to come back again.

M ( Leeds )

We have had a wonderfuly lazy week. The apartment is great, we have been very comfortable and feel quite privileged to have been able to stay here. The people have been so kind, helpful, courteous and we have met some really good companions. Best restaurants in our opinion were The Olive Garden, Ozalp, Tomato. Tomato was a bit hit & miss – one good meal – one poor one. Best boat trip is Hazel – food superb we had two excellent days out touring around the bay. We can't wait to come back to Kalkan. Could go on forever, but one of the best holidays we have ever had.

L & G (Cheshire)

Well what can we say, we have had a lovely week, when we have been able to tear ourselves away from the peaceful balcony with the amazing views we have made it down to the beach platforms. These are great as they are private and some give you direct access into the sea which was lovely. We have been coming to Turkey for about 6 years and have found the apartment and Kalkan to be just perfect, having everything on our doorstep, the views, the good restaurants and Kalkan oozing with Turkish charm. It has been brilliant. We particularly enjoyed eating in Kosk, Gironda, Ozcup. We hired a car through Paradise in Kalkan which was very easy. Everywhere you visit I'm sure would be stunning here, however our personal favourites have included Islamar, Saklikent Gorge Patara Beach and ruins and Kapatus Beach . If you want to go further afield try visiting Kayakay near Fetihye for journey back into history. Amazing place. Thanks for a wonderful week in a gorgeous apartment in such a beautiful setting. We will be back next year.

S & L (Calverley)

We can only echo the words of previous guests in praising this apartment, Patara Prince and Kalkan. We enjoyed it so much we extended our stay. Kalkan is a great centre for exploring places like Patara, Saklikent, Kas and Kekova. We have had two days at sea with Captain Serif and his wife who is a great cook, the best lunch on a boat trip ever! We have tried the recommended restaurants and particularly enjoyed Osalp especially the lamb. We have had a few days of spectacular thunder and lightening but that's not unusual this late in the season, just unlucky. I'm sure the sun will shine tomorrow. Will be back here one day.

B & K

We have had a great time here. Even though it's the end of October, the weather has been great. Both the apartment and the resort is gorgeous. The views are beautiful and everywhere you go. The town Kalkan is really nice, the food is lovely we ate at Tomato, Aubergine (not that overpriced really compared to home) and a gorgeous pied place away from the main centre up towards the market. We went on a boat trip swimming in a cave and had a mud bath. I would also recommend any of the designer bag shops for bargain hunters!.
