Area Description

The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

Turkey's Western Mediterranean coast which is also known as the Turquoise coast is approximately 1,600km long and scattered with fine sandy beaches, numerous bays and harbours.

It stretches from Izmir and the package holiday destination of Kusadasi in the North, down through Bodrum, Mamaris and Dalaman peninsulas as far as Fethiye, Kalkan and Antalya in the South. Beyond beaches and stunning harbours, there are the sailing and yachting destinations of Marmaris and Kalkan, the chic marina facilities of Bodrum as well as the ancient town of Fethiye.

The local climate tends to be mid twenties from early May, to mid thirties during the months of June through September/October with little or no rainfall.

The Bodrum / Yalikavak area

Yalikavak is situated on the Bodrum peninsula on the south west coast of Turkey. It sits overlooking a large curving bay backed by wooded hills and a pretty former fishing village that has not lost it's tranquil atmosphere in spite of the growth of the holiday market.

The main beach is just 3 kms outside Yalikavak town and within easy walking distance of the Blue Bay Heights complex. The water is clear and clean as most of the main bays in the area have attained Blue Flag status.

Local nightlife is centred on Yalikavak's bars and restaurants which are dotted around the town. There are late night venues or discos in some of the local hotels (mostly situated around the marina).

Yalikavak and the other large towns on the peninsula, Bodrum and Turgetreis are approximately 20 - 30 minute drive time from each other. The airport lies about 45 kms from Yalikavak and can be reached by car in about 40 -45 minutes for domestic and international flights.

Bodrum town lies on the ruins of the city of Halicarnassus, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (Mausoleum of Halicarnassus). Bodrum Castle which was built by the Knights of St. John in the 15th Century and which now acts as a major tourist attraction housing the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, acts as the main focal point in Bodrum. The town also boasts an internationally renowned marina (one of three on the Bodrum peninsula, the others being at Turgetreis and Yalikavak) which attracts the European jet set during the Summer months and includes restaurants and chic shops to boot. NIghtlife is centred in Bodrum town, the harbour area and around the marina, or on nearby Gumbet beach.

Dotted around the peninsula are many white windmills (now being fully restored across the region) which are made of stone and lined with wooden planks and which were originally used to grind flour. These can be seen on the tops of hills and backed by stunning views down to the Aegean sea.

Popular activities on the Bodrum peninsula include sailing/yachting, scuba diving (there are up to 15 official dive sites out of Bodrum town alone), water sports and snorkelling, as well as day trips to a number of the nearby Greek islands (Kos, Simi, Rhodes and Kalymnos) during Summertime.

Each of the towns of Bodrum, Turgetreis and Yalikavak have large local markets each week, selling an array of fruit and vegetables, olives, spices, honey and during the Summer period clothes and local produce more suited to tourist tastes.
