Area Description

Vibrant and truly multicultural, London is one of the largest cities in Western Europe and the European Union. Situated on the River Thames in South-East England, Greater London has an official population of nearly 8 million people ? although the figure of over 14 million for the city's total metropolitan area more accurately reflects London's size and importance. London is one of the great "world cities," and remains a global capital of culture, fashion, finance, politics and trade.

London will host the 2012 Summer Olympics.

The Central London/Zone 1 / Charing Cross area

The West End of London. Long established as an entertainment district, for much of the 20th century it has a reputation for tourist entertainment as well as night life and film industry. Since the early 1980s, the area has undergone considerable transformation. It now is predominantly a fashionable district of upmarket bars and restaurants, theatres, shopping and cinemas.

It is within walking distances to all the tourist attractions of central London including Trafalgar Square, The River Thames, Buckingham Palace, Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, St James' and both Hyde and Regents Parks. Plenty of bars, restaurants and shopping.

Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton airports are the main airports with a large range of airlines travelling in and out of the city. For most leisure and business travellers, Heathrow is the best option as the cost of transfers from and to the Airport are very reasonable.

It is easily walked to from the underground stations at Charing Cross,Embankment. Charing Cross is also a mainline station.
