The Cape Verde Islands are situated about five hundred kilometres from the west coast of Africa, in the Atlantic Ocean, and consist of ten major islands and eight much smaller islets. Between them they offer an excellent choice of white sandy beaches, breathtaking mountain scenery and a mouth-watering selection of seafood dishes which all add up to its highly enviable reputation as one of the most exciting holiday destinations that the world has to offer.

Although Cape Verde is officially a West African country, many of the islands where colonized by the Portuguese during the 16th century and this has created an exceptionally colourful, melodic and vibrant culture which is represented in the local cuisine and the distinctive musical styles which are unique to the region.

There are several activities to enjoy on the Cape Verde Islands and some of the more popular pastimes include surfing and windsurfing, as the trade winds are responsible for some exceptionally favourable conditions for those who love to surf. The official language which is spoken by Cape Verdeans is Portuguese, although the vast majority of young adults can easily speak and understand English. Crioulo is also widely spoken by many of the islanders, which can best be described as a unique blend of Portuguese and West African words and phrases.

In terms of climate, the Cape Verde Islands enjoy moderate weather the whole year round consisting of warm, dry summers and very occasional light rain.
